The nest was unusual in that it first hatched on July 21 with one solitary turtle in the cage. The main group of 101 emerged 2 days later on July 23, and a few stragglers emerged after that.

This turtle was tagged after laying eggs! Mary DeMicco assisted Nancy Evou and Kennard Watson who placed metal tags in the turtles front flippers (left PPQ-073, right PPQ-072). We named her Bobette in honor of RMAs former treasurer. We hope to see Bobette again in the coming weeks, as loggerheads lay an average of four nests in a season.

This is our second tagged turtle of the 2000 season. Shirley Brown, Tonya and Chris Floyd assisted Kennard Watson who put tag PPQ-069 in the left front flipper. The turtles 36-inch shell was missing a large piece above the right rear flipper. Given the shape of the old wound, we should call this turtle Sharky...or maybe Lucky! |

This is the third turtle tagged this season. Rhonda Hoeckley and Diane Wetherbee assisted Nancy Evou who installed tag PPQ-054 in the right front flipper and PPQ-055 in the left flipper. The turtle had a deformed right rear flipper which made it hard for her to dig the nest chamber. |

This loggerhead did a great job of concealing the location of her eggs. Four volunteers dug for over 2 hours to find the nest, which was located near the edge of the body pit created by the turtle. |

This nest was missed by the daily survey. It was found on July 31 by Rob and Emily Hamel of Houston with help from Ben Hamel and Kirby, Robert, and Ryan Carlisle of Atlanta. Most of the nest was washed away when surf exposed the egg cavity, but volunteers were able to salvage 22 eggs thanks to our friends from Texas and Georgia. We're happy to report that 15 of the salvaged eggs hatched. |

Diane Wetherbee and Tina Lewis were contacted about this nest which was found by a little boy playing in the sand. Diane and Tina found the most unique way of marking a nest. They took a picture of the wonderful art work the little boy had left. He marked the nest with sticks and charcoal in an arrow shape that pointed to the nest location. A picture will be available soon on the How Are Nests Found page. Thank you very much and good work. This also makes a record number of nests found on Panama City Beach. |
